CAN I REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Extensive research shows that parents and families can be a vital factor in keeping children from becoming involved with the harmful use of drugs.

By being better informed you are able to communicate more effectively with your child.  Knowledge of available resources also puts you in a position to significantly reduce the risks to your child.

There is a wide spectrum of drug use, ranging from abstinence to experimentation, casual use to dependence.  Parents need to know how to respond in the most appropriate way.  To simply tell your child to stop using drugs or just say “No” can be naive.  It’s a much more complex issue, particularly as the child moves through adolescence to independence.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DRUG-PROOF YOUR KIDS?

If you mean, “Can you stop children from trying tobacco, alcohol or illicit drugs?” the answer is NO!  If you mean, “Can parents be more effective at influencing their children’s choices in relation to drug use?”  The answer is YES!

While much harm is caused by illicit drug use, considerable harm is also caused by the misuse or abuse of legal drugs – including prescription medication.

Risk-taking is a normal part of adolescence, and because our children grow up in a drug-taking society, parents must know how they can educate their children and learn how to respond appropriately.

Although the Drug Proof Your Kids ®program provides no guarantee to parents that their children will not use drugs, it does recognise that drugs touch children from all kinds of families, and that parents need to be better prepared and informed.

DRUG-PROOF YOUR KIDS PROGRAM ® is an education and prevention program developed by Focus on the Family ® Australia, to help parents steer their children away from harmful drug use.
